Summary: The UIS Career Development Center is accepting applications for the position of Career Counselor. Under general supervision of the Assistant Director for the Career Development Center, the Career Counselor provides a full range of career development services to students, alumni, and prospective students.  Requirements include a Master’s degree in Counseling, Higher Education, Psychology, Social Work, or related area of study and two years of experience in career/mental health counseling with the ability to assist students/alumni in the development of realistic career goals and job search strategies. Starting salary $42,000.

Under general supervision of the Assistant Director for the Career Development Center, the Career Counselor provides a full range of career development services to students, alumni, staff, faculty, and prospective students. The Career Counselor functions as an effective member of the Career Development Center team with a solution focused mindset to openly engage and communicate with colleagues to advance department goals. This unit provides office-based and distance-based services promoting long-term career planning and career development encompassing career counseling, vocational testing/assessment, development of job search strategies, preparation services for graduate school and executes community and campus based professional development seminars, workshops and events.

  • Provides professional counseling to individuals and groups, integrating career and personal counseling to address students’ psychological, emotional, and social concerns within the career domain, using face-to-face and distance counseling methods. Assesses individual career development needs and provides students and alumni the necessary skills to understand the ramifications of their career decisions and actions as it relates to a life-long process. Administers and interprets individual interests, skills, abilities, values, and strengths assessment instruments.
  • Serves as primary student resource for general questions about Career Center services and offerings. Acts as liaison and general resource to faculty and academic advisors by offering services to better accommodate students with career development needs as it relates to their department and/or course. Systematically advocates and provides services relative to the Mobil Career Center and Career Suite Programs. Initiates development, assessment, and marketing to improve and update offerings based on student feedback and needs.
  • Assists in planning and executing numerous campus-wide career development seminars and workshops, and classroom presentations to educate students, constituents, staff and faculty about the career planning process. Plays a role in planning and managing specific career services' informational programs to be presented to incoming students and their parents during preview days, orientations, and any other forum as the need arises. Assists with planning and executing Career Center events.
  • Continuously, benchmarks and assesses counseling and advising services in accordance with NACE, NCDA, and CAS standards. Researches, reviews, updates and proposes enhancements for the career and resource information contained in the career resource library and CDC website to reflect the UIS student population served and degrees offered. Creates, updates, revises, and maintains departmental operating procedures and training manual in addition to developing and implementing counseling records compliance in accordance to FERPA and HIPAA; composes and disseminates external information for the campus on departmental standards and policies; develops standardized departmental forms, policies, correspondence and other similar materials. Represents the university and career services at professional association conferences and professional development workshops.
  • Initiates and implements strategies designed to increase the number of students using departmental services; works cooperatively with other staff to coordinate referrals for all Career Center service offerings.
  • Researches, develops and contributes written reports detailing student outcomes, usage of services, client satisfaction results etc. for departmental reporting purpose; provides recommendations for improvement. Actively remains current and efficient in the uses of online career systems by attending trainings and other offerings to hone technical skills.
  • Aids in planning and supervising the activities of practicum students, interns, and paraprofessionals.
  • Other projects/duties as assigned/negotiated.

 

Required:

  • Master’s degree in Counseling, Higher Education, Psychology, Social Work, or related area of study.
  • Two years of experience in career/mental health counseling with the ability to assist students/alumni in the development of realistic career goals and job search strategies.
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Experience in individual and group career counseling techniques with knowledge in distance counseling.

Preferred:

  • Career services experience in higher education.
  • Successful completion of the Licensed Professional Counselor designation (LPC), Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) designation, National Certified Counselor (NCC) designation, Distance Credentialed Counselor designation, or similar.  
  • Computer Literacy:  Proficiency in career development technical guidance systems such as Focus, Nacelink, Optimal Resume, Going Global; Experience in distance counseling practices as established by the Center for Credentialing and Education.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills firmly rooted in ability to relate to the diversity of constituents.
  • In-depth knowledge of counseling and career development theories and techniques with a complete understanding of the interrelationship between mental health and career development concerns.
  • Ability to assess career barriers, career maturity and decision making skills.
  • Knowledge in alternative approaches to career development and planning needs for individuals with disabilities, minorities, older job-seekers, and first generation students, etc. 
  • Knowledge of current employment trends and career planning materials.
