Functional Summary:

 

The Senior Staff Attorney will be responsible for direct case representation and working collaboratively with other Illinois Innocence Project (IIP) attorneys on actual innocence cases and for direct oversight of the IIP legal externship program. 

 

 

  • Act as lead attorney and work collaboratively with other IIP attorneys in the management of case investigative efforts, including following up on case reviews and selection; interviewing and visiting inmates and witnesses; retrieving and analyzing pertinent case information; and working with and reviewing the work product of student interns. (30%)
  • Act as lead attorney and work collaboratively with other IIP attorneys to develop case legal strategies and take necessary legal actions on behalf of clients, such as the drafting of motions, petitions, and other legal documents to be submitted to the court and appreaing in court on behalf of clients. (30%)
  • Oversee IIP's legal externship program - fulfill the administrative and instructive aspects of the program, including developing curriculum, interviewing and selecting extern candidates, instructing legal students in wrongful convictions and post-conviction procedure, assigning and evaluating case work, conducting weekly or bi-weekly team meetings, incorporating students into legal calls and expert meetings, professional development oversight, and conducting mid-semester and final evaluations. (25%)
  • Recruit and/or collaborate with private attorneys to assist with casework and client representation, where necessary and/or desirable. (5%)
  • Participate in case review and case selection with IIP staff and cooperating faculty and students. (5%)
  • Make public and private presentations about the work of the Illinois Innocence Project. (5%)

 

Qualifications/Minimum Education and Work Experience:

  • Licensed to practice law in the State of Illinois.
  • Minimum of five years of relevant litigation experience, including post-conviction, actual innocence, and/or criminal law experience.
  • Ability to participate productively on multi-disciplinary project teams made up of faculty, staff, undergraduate and law students, attorneys, investigators, experts, law enforcement, and prosecutors.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability and willingness to travel (with a valid driver's license) frequently within Illinois and occasionally out of state.
  • Ability to work efficiently from a remote location - this position is based in the Chicagoland area and does not provide independent office space.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Understanding of and commitment to the mission and programs of the Illinois Innocence Project
  • Prior experience supervising law students in a clinical and/or externship setting
  • Prior experience presenting to public audiences about wrongful convictions
  • Spanish language skills

 

 

Minimum Starting Salary:  $90,000 annually
