The University of Illinois at Springfield is governed under the State Universities Civil Service System (SUCSS). These employees support many activities at the University of Illinois. They hold jobs in clerical, crafts and trades, managerial, para-professional, professional, service, and technical areas. An applicant applying for permanent civil service employment must compete successfully in the appropriate SUCSS examination. Examinations are open only to citizens or residents of Illinois who qualify for the position.
Civil Service (CS) positions are filled using lists of names called registers. Individuals take examinations for particular classifications, and their scores are recorded on lists (registers) of qualified individuals. Scores appear in order, from highest to lowest, and the registers change each time new scores are added. When a position opens in a department, a pre-determined number of individuals with the highest scores become eligible to interview. Applicants must be pre-approved upon initial login before allowed to complete an application or request an exam. Civil Service exam requests for classifications that are not currently vacant will be processed based upon testing resource availability.
